The fundamental objective of the SENIOR TV project is the development of a platform for Smart TV which can be used to present services to the elderly. On the 2nd and 3rd of February, representatives of the consortium responsible for carrying out this project gathered in the building CITEXVI to start various working groups.
Manuel Fernández Iglesias, Vice Chancellor of International Relations at the University of Vigo, was in charge of welcoming the participants, following up on a series of meetings also attended by representatives of the agency responsible for coordinating the project, the Institute of Neuroscience and Technology Cyprus (CNTI) and the Department of Telematic Engineering at the University of Vigo.
Sira López Castro and Cibrán Ledo Peláez, the people responsible for the Senior TV project in imatia, had the opportunity to share impressions with their colleagues from the other companies in the consortium: Gluk Advice (The Netherlands), Compexin SA – CPX (Romania), Dom upokojencev Nova Gorica – DUNG (Slovenia), Development Centre of Information and Communication Technologies Savinja Žalec, Ltd – RC-IKTS (Slovenia), Ana Aslan International Foundation (Romania) and Strovolos Municial Multi-Functional Foundation – SMMFF (Cyprus).
Senior TV will allow elderly who live alone to access, in a simple and cheap manner, different formal and informal services that improve their quality of life. These services are centred on active prevention and the maintenance of relationships with friends, family and the community. The services are designed in close collaboration with end-users, by using trials in Romania, Slovenia and Cyprus.
The entities participating in the project are responsible for identifying the technologies most appropriate for implementing these services using a Smart TV platform in combination with other devices such as tablets and smartphones. Different applications will provide these services, of which some will become available open source at the end of the project. Moreover, third parties will be allowed to develop their own applications and distribute them through an appstore. Finally, different marketing strategies will be explored in order to produce a sustainable model for facilitating the incorporation of the Senior TV throughout all of Europe.
The project is co-financed through AAL (Active Assisted Living Research and Development Programme), a programme of the European Union and the Ministry of Industry Energy and Tourism of the Spanish government. The objective of AAL is to improve the quality of life of the elderly through the development and utilization of innovative and sustainable solutions based on technologies of information and communication (TIC). This is also included in the Horizon Programme of 2020.
