The launch of the first phase of the project will coincide with Holy Year 2010, where millions of people from all over the globe are expected to walk into Santiago de Compostela. That’s in real life. In a virtual universe, cyberpilgrims will also be able to enjoy the same experience through a 3D videogame, taken back to the 12th Century. The “metauniverse” – 3D virtual universe – will reconstruct the city of Santiago and the way of St. James in the year 1117, a very key time period in the history of Galicia. Users will be able to see and experience arquitectonic and sociological elements of that era, including the world-reknown cathedral that was still under construction the Gelmírez Palace, as well as other elements representative of that period. The user experience is also geared to be extremely engaging and educational. Through the use of avatars, users may be transformed to solders or residents. The characters are meticulously designed using different sources, ranging from private medieval collections to literary works and reliefs from the 12th Century. Users will also learn more about history in a fun and interactive manner. Just as with any project of this magnitude and scope, there is a consortium of companies participating in this project, led by Ficción Producciones, a leading production company based in Galicia, Spain. The universities of Vigo and Santiago de Compostela are also contributing to the project.
