Imatia Optimizes Offshore Wind Farm Design.

Imatia is one of the firms chosen to participate in EOLIA, a project headed by worldwide renewable energy leader Acciona Energia and that is backed by an investment of almost 34 milion Euros. EOLIA’s main objective is the development of the necessary technologies to allow the installation of offshore wind farms in the near future. In an initiative to push for increased renewable energy, European leaders signed a binding European Union-wide target to source 20% of their energy needs from clean sources.

Imatia’s team is responsible of developing the software solution that should help determine the optimal positioning of the wind generators, in a way that production can be maximized while keeping costs to a minimum. To do so, the R&D Departments applies a variety of AI methodologies, as well as GIS technologies.  As Alejandro Ricart, the main investigator explains, “To help determine the ideal placement, each and every possible variable must be taken into account, ranging from the energy potential and swell to ocean floor characteristics and environmental impact.”

Although there is still much work to do before an actual wind farm can be installed and put to use, the project EOLIA is making headway to in taking the preliminary steps and perfecting the technology for when it’s time to make the next move. Along with the other members of the consortium, Imatia will continue to collaborate so the EU’s target becomes a reality.
